Frequently Asked Questions
1. What to pack for baby in hospital bag?
After having my second child, I finally know what’s truly practical. Don’t buy too much—it really will go to waste…
As a second-time mom, I learned you don’t need a suitcase—just the right basics. Pack newborn diapers, wipes/cotton pads, 2–3 bodysuits, 2 sleepers, a soft hat, and socks. Add muslin cloths (you’ll use more than you think), a swaddle/blanket, and a simple going-home outfit. If you’re bottle-feeding, bring what you prefer unless your hospital provides it. Biggest must-have: a properly installed rear-facing car seat for discharge.
2. How to get an overtired baby to sleep?
I know exactly how overwhelming it feels — because I’ve been through it many times too…
Overtired babies don’t need more tricks—they need less. Dim the lights, keep your voice low, and do a short routine you can repeat every time (diaper → feed → cuddle). Use steady soothing like rocking, gentle patting, or white noise. If baby fights sleep, try an earlier bedtime the next night; waiting often makes it harder. At night, keep feeds and changes calm and boring—no bright lights, no play. Over a few days, this consistency usually helps baby’s body “remember” sleep again.
3. Why does my baby cry in his sleep?
There are many possible reasons — and you need to understand them before you can know how to soothe…
This one scared me with my first. Often, it’s normal: babies shift between sleep stages and can fuss or cry briefly without fully waking. Other common causes are hunger, gas, a wet diaper, or being too warm/cold. If the cry is short and baby stays asleep, you can pause a moment before jumping in—sometimes they settle on their own. But if crying is frequent, intense, or paired with fever, poor feeding, vomiting, or breathing issues, it’s worth calling your pediatrician.
4. When do you stop burping a baby?
Every baby is a little different, but there is a general timeline you can follow…
There’s no single age. You can usually burp less when baby feeds smoothly, spits up less, and doesn’t seem gassy or uncomfortable after meals. Early on, I burp during natural pauses—after a few minutes on the breast or every couple ounces by bottle—then I gradually skip it if baby stays content. Some babies still benefit occasionally during growth spurts or faster feeds. Think of burping as a comfort tool, not a strict rule: if baby looks relaxed, you’re probably fine to stop.
5. How to encourage baby to walk?
The best way to encourage walking is giving baby safe freedom to practice…
Create a baby-proof space for lots of floor time. Let baby pull up on sturdy furniture and “cruise” along it. Offer your hands for a few steps, but keep support low so they learn balance. Stable push toys can help if they don’t roll too fast. A little barefoot time on safe surfaces can improve grip and confidence. Avoid rolling baby walkers—they can be unsafe and don’t teach real balance. If milestones worry you, check in with your pediatrician.
